Does it matter if I am a beginner or have studied the language some before? Do I have to start in fall?
All levels are welcome! We have open enrollment; the students can begin a course in this program at any level Fall, Winter, or Spring terms.
What are the classes like?
This is quite a unique learning environment. The classes are small (5-10 students) and have an emphasis on spoken language taught by tutors who are native speakers, many of whom are also expert language teachers. The students receive 2 hours of instruction. The pace and content of our courses are determined by student interest. You learn the language by immersing yourselves in real-life situations while you discover both the linguistic and cultural richness of what each language offers.
How do I sign up for it?
The classes appear under GSL 199 on the course schedule. You will notice that these courses will be taught remotely this term and that there is no time assigned yet. That is because the class time is determined by the availability of the students' and tutors' schedules at the mandatory orientation meeting, we have on the first Thursday of every term. If you are a UO student, you can take the classes for 1 credit and sign up through DuckWeb. Community member can contact Harinder Khalsa, the program coordinator, or Robert Elliott, Yamada Language Center director for details.
Mandatory Orientation Meeting
Each term the orientation meeting takes place the first Thursday of first week of classes. For Fall 2025 is on Wednesday, October 2nd, 5:30-6:45 pm (PT) at the Yamada Language Center in MCK 175.
